RECOMMENDED READING - PERU BIRDING |
 |
- Dunning, John S. 1989. South American Birds: A photographic
Aid to Identification. Harrowood Books, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania,
USA. - Color photographs of over 1000 South American land birds
including birds of Peru. While most photographs are of good quality,
the book as a field guide has had a some criticism regarding the
unnatural position of some species and colors of some photos.
- Fjeldsa, Jon and Neil Krabbe. 1990. Birds of the High Andes.
Apollo Books, Denmark. - A very good book covering the description,
natural history, distribution of all species of the temperate
zone of the high Andes from Venezuela to Argentina. Good depiction
of species showing male, female, and in some cases immature plumages
in typical postures. The book is expensive and rather heavy, but
worth studying prior to the tour.
- Hilty, S. L. 1994. Birds of Tropical America. Chapters Publishing,
Ltd., Shelburne, CT. - An entertaining treatment of the behavior,
and the natural history of Neotropical birds. The author divides
the book into several chapters dealing with topics ranging from
bird coloration, vocalizations, courtship and interaction with
plants and other animals.
- Walker, Barry, and Jon Fjeldsa. 2001. Field Guide to the Birds
of Machu Picchu. Profonampe, Lima - A great field guide to the
Birds found in the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary. Works well
for other Cusco habitats as well, and is a good substitute for
Birds of the High Andes in this area.
