This unique program offers the active traveler a challenging trek up the world's tallest free-standing
mountain combined with an unmatched opportunity to take part in a safari in some of Africa's most
spectacular wildlife parks. You begin your adventure with a trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro
along the scenic Machame Route. After your climb you will spend extraordinary days on game drives visiting
some of Tanzania's most spectacular parks. Your private mobile tented camp in the Serengeti (or Tarangire),
provides comfort and proximity to the vast herds and the predators that follow their movement.
ITINERARY

DAY 1: USA - ARUSHA
Arrive in the evening at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Meet representative from Andean &
Rainforest Expeditions and transfer to Arusha for dinner and overnight. Kigongoni Lodge. D
DAY 2: MOSHI
After breakfast, drive to Moshi town, near Mount Kilimanjaro (1.5 hours). Arrive for lunch and
an afternoon hike through villages, learning about the Chagga tribe from the Kilimanjaro region.
Evening briefing with your mountain guide. Impala Hotel, Moshi. B,L,D
DAY 3: BEGIN MACHAME ROUTE
You will drive to the trailhead in Moshi to meet with your guide to begin the Kilimanjaro climb.
The length of the trek today is 3 miles, taking between 5-7 hours. You will stay at Machame Hut. B,L,D
DAY 4: MACHAME HUT TO SHIRA HUT
A steep climb today, 7-9 hours, ascending to an altitude of 12,600 feet. Stay at Shira Hut. B,L,D
DAY 5: SHIRA HUT TO BARRANCO HUT
A 3-mile hike today, but gaining only 360 feet in altitude, allowing you to acclimatize a bit more.
Stay at Barranco Hut. B,L,D
DAY 6: BARRANCO HUT TO BARAFU HUT
The trail follows the floor of the Great Barranco Valley and leads up to the base of the Barranco
Wall. The hike today is about 2.4 miles, taking 8-10 hours and gaining an additional 2,100 feet
to bring you to an altitude of 15,000 feet. Stay at Barafu Hut. B,L,D
DAY 7: SUMMIT DAY!
This is clearly the most challenging day. You will rise at midnight and begin the final ascent to
the summit, 4,300 feet in altitude gain. It is a long slow hike, usually taking 6-8 hours to reach
the summit at 19,300 feet. Once reaching the summit, you will enjoy the sunrise and contemplate all
that you have accomplished and experienced on this challenging and wonderful trek. The descent will
take from 4-7 hours to the Uhuru Peak-Rau Camp. B,L,D
DAY 8: DESCENT - KIGONGONI LODGE
The final descent out of the park takes about 3-5 hours, depending upon the condition of the trail
(there may be mud). You will be met by our representative at the park gate and transferred into Arusha
to have a celebration dinner at Kigongoni Lodge. B,L,D
DAY 9: LAKE MANYARA
After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara, on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley. Arrive in time
for lunch and an afternoon game drive in this small, but diverse park. The park is famous for its
elephants, tree-climbing lions, hippos, giraffe and spectacular bird life. Serena Lodge. B,L,D
DAY 10: NGORONGORO CRATER
After breakfast, drive to Ngorongoro Crater, arriving in time to briefly check in and then descend
into the Crater for a picnic lunch and game drive. Serena Lodge. B,L,D
DAY 11 -13: SERENGETI OR TARANGIRE
January - June: Drive to Serengeti National Park, stopping along the way to visit Oldupai Gorge,
the site of Louis and Mary Leakey's famous archeological discoveries. Continue into the famous
Serengeti, the largest national park in Tanzania. Travel to your private luxury mobile camp, which
will be located as close to the herds as possible.
July - December: Drive to Taragire National Park, stopping along the way to visit a Maasi village.
These three days will be spent on a game drive. Stay at a private mobile camp. B,L,D
DAY 14: ARUSHA-DEPART
Enjoy one last game drive in the Serengeti as you travel to the airstrip for the Regional Air flight
to Arusha at 11:15, arriving at 12:15. Arrive in time for shopping and late lunch at the lodge.
The rest of the afternoon is free to relax at the lodge, pack and shower. Farewell dinner and early
evening transfer to Kilimanjaro for return flight. Kigongoni Lodge dayroom. B,L,D

TRIP DIFFICULTY: Climb reaches altitudes as high as 19,300 feet and requires a high level of
physical conditioning. Travelers with health conditions such as heart disease and high blood
pressure should consult their physician.
